The Grant: In May of 2007, the VFLSC received an AFG--Fire Safety & Prevention grant award to train 50 certified Public Fire & Life Safety Educators to Level II -- at no or greatly reduced cost to the student. At this level of training and certification, the Educators may be more capable of functioning autonomously and better able to discover challenges to fire and life safety in the community, define solutions to meet these challenges, work with government leaders and their agencies to adequately fund these solutions, and document their success. Also included in the grant goals: a decrease in the ratio of advanced public educators to at-risk populations (1 to 140,000) and to the general public (1 to 750,000 ); a pass/fail rate of 75%/25% on certification testing; having all areas of the Commonwealth represented at these training sessions; to have a majority (60%) of volunteer personnel, as this is representative of the fire service in Virginia; and a demonstrated financial need. |
Grant Execution: Grant execution includes two VDFP-Certified 1035-Public Fire & Life Safety Educator, Level II classes before the end of May of 2008, at no or greatly reduced cost to the students ! Each class will have a maximum of 25 students; one class will be in the Williamsburg area in January and the other class will be in the Roanoke area in April, 2008 . We will attempt to hold these training sessions in a conference facility, with food and lodging, so travel is minimized, and most needs will be taken care of. The students' investment will be time and attention; we will try to pay all other associated cost. |
Selection: There are nearly 200 Public Educators certified to 1035, Level I in the Commonwealth. These educators will be offered the opportunity to attend one of two grant-funded 1035 classes, and 50 students will be selected from applicants. Selection will be based on the grant goals, and on a first-come, first-served basis--so apply early ! *We need to fill both classes to capacity ! *Final selection cannot occur before the application deadline of March 12th, 2008. Selected applicants will be notified, and they must acknowledge acceptance and pay a *refundable $25 registration fee. Each attendee will receive a stipend, in the form of free registration, free room (2 nights), travel expenses (mileage reimbursement), and most meals, as well as reimbursement of cost incurred for background check. *A personal, company, or departmental check is preferred, and will be returned upon completion of the class. Registrants not accepted will also be notified, and will be referred to a scheduled VDFP 1035 Level II class in 2008. (Click Here to see the VFMA course schedule.)
